I had oral surgery the other day, and eating raw when unable to open your mouth very far is difficult. The first day, I was able to survive on smoothies (thanks to my husband for making them from me from scratch...fresh juice!). But the next day, I had had enough of smoothies, I wanted something not sweet. Nuts, veggies, I couldn't get any of them in my mouth or chew them! So I ate soup, and some Thai food. Macaroni and cheese too...it was a very long time since I'd had them. The whole time I kept thinking about how my body wasn't getting the nutrition it needed. But I'm healing fast, so obviously I'm getting enough. However, there was a fear that I wouldn't be able to go back to raw when my jaw started working properly again. Instead, I can't wait! All that lettuce sitting in my fridge...soon, I'll be back soon!
There is an interesting workshop and talk happening in Baltimore Maryland, especially from the point of view of what we eat and why. Some of the awful stuff we put in our mouths can't be explained from the point of view of taste or physical appeal. Has our society simply been conditioned to believe that McDonald's and Dominoes taste good, and are doing good things for our bodies? Are we eating like machines, with no attention to what we consume? Here's a link for those interested:
